Proficiency in English
You are required to pass one of the following language tests with the indicated minimum score requirement:
TOEFL iBT 90 (internet based), or
IELTS 6.5 (Academic version, Overall Band Score), or
University of Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) or Certificate in Advanced English (CAE).
The following three tests are accepted as proof of proficiency in English:
Cambridge International Examinations
IELTS (academic module)
We only accept official test results. Copies will not be taken into consideration. Make sure the testing institute sends the test results directly to the Admissions Office of the University of Amsterdam.
Prospective students must have a minimum score of:
570 for the paper test,
230 for the computer test,
90 for the internet test.
Cambridge International Examinations
Prospective students taking one of the Cambridge International Examinations must achieve the following results:
Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): scores A and B+
Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): scores A, B and C
Students taking the IELTS test should have a minimum score of 6.5.
The following English language proficiency test results are accepted by TU/e:
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
Overall band score of at least 90 AND a minimum score of 21 for each section.
Please note that we only accept the TOEFL internet-based test.
IELTS (academic version) with an overall band score of at least 6.5 and a minimum of 6.0 for each section.
University of Cambridge
proof that you have passed the University of Cambridge ‘Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)’, or University of Cambridge ‘Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)’,grades A-C.
N.B. It is obligatory to fill in the overall score and the section scores if you submit an IELTS or TOEFL test result.
No other language tests are accepted than the tests mentioned above.
Test results older than two years cannot be accepted.It may take as much as 6 weeks after you have taken your language test for the test center to issue your results.
If you have taken an IELTS or TOEFL test, but have not yet received the official test score report, you may upload and send your results from the internet, including your username and password from your TOEFL account (preferable typed and not written) or the TRF number from your IELTS test. TU/e will then verify your results on the IELTS or TOEFL website. Keep in mind that we need to be able to verify your English test results before the final deadline of application. Please note that a different application deadline applies for selection programs.
